Updates to Apple's MacBook line of laptops are always closely watched, Sony VGP-BPS8 and they generally fall into two categories: there are major evolutions, such as the switch to aluminum unibody construction in 2008, and then there are minor spec upgrades, typically small bumps to processor speed and hard-drive size.

 

The newest version of the MacBook Pro line surprisingly falls outside of those two extremes.Sony VGP-BPS8B The iconic unibody aluminum construction remains, as does its large glass multitouch trackpad (in fact, from the outside, the new MacBook Pro looks identical to its predecessor). But the revamped internal components are much more than a simple spec upgrade.

The 15- and 17-inch Pro models have moved to Intel's newer line of Core-i CPUs,Sony VGP-BPS8A from the older Core 2 Duo models (the 13-inch Pro, unfortunately, still uses a Core 2 Duo CPU). Both mainstream Core i5 and high-end Core i7 versions are available. This requires a new chipset architecture (courtesy of Intel) and a switch from the integrated Nvidia GeForce 9400 to Intel's built-in integrated graphics for the systems' default GPU.

Our review sample is the highest-end 15-inch base configuration,Sony VGP-BPS9 with a 2.66GHz Core i7 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, and Nvidia GeForce GT330M discrete graphics. At $2,199, it's definitely expensive, but it's still $100 cheaper than the previous high-end 15-inch MacBook Pro configuration. The lowest-priced 15-inch model costs $1,799, which is $100 more than the previous low-end 15-inch MacBook Pro--but that system now includes discrete graphics instead of only integrated graphics. Overall,Sony VGP-BPS9/S this round of updates follows the usual Apple trajectory: keeping the price steady but adding faster, more powerful components.

We continue to pine for oft-requested extras such as HDMI, Blu-ray, and 3G,Sony VGP-BPS9/B but at the same time, the Core i7 CPU is extremely impressive, both on paper and in action. With the 13-inch model still stuck with a Core 2 Duo CPU, this revamped 15-inch MacBook Pro now feels like the line's powerhouse flagship model.

As with the previous MacBook Pro models, the unibody chassis starts with a solid block of aluminum, which is carved down, rather than a thin outer shell that has had support struts added to it.Sony VGP-BPS9A/B The result is a thin yet strong chassis that feels very solid and substantial. Even the $999 white polycarbonate MacBook now uses a similar body type.

We remain fond of the large trackpad that uses multitouch gestures for much of its functionality. In fact, touch controls are almost as vital to the MacBook as they are to the iPhone or iPad (plugging in a mouse is also an option, but you miss out on a lot of time-saving gesture controls that way).

Of the multitouch gestures, our favorite is sweeping moves with four fingers;Sony PCGA-BP2SA left or right brings up the application switcher, and up hides all your active windows. Once you get used to that, going back to a regular touch pad is difficult. We've noted in the past year or so that many PC makers have added some form of multitouch functionality to their touch pads, but we have yet to find any that work as well as Apple's.

This year's version also includes a small behavioral tweak, which Apple calls "inertial scrolling." Like on the iPhone and iPad, flicking two fingers up or down to scroll now feels like there's more mass behind the effort,Sony VGP-BPL8 and the page will continue to move slightly after you've lifted up your fingers. The recent Magic Mouse peripheral from Apple included a similar effect.

The 15.4-inch wide-screen display offers a 1,440x900-pixel native resolution, which is what we're used to from previous 15-inch MacBook Pro models. But with the growth of online HD video, and ever-higher resolutions for digital still and video cameras, some users will want more pixels to play with. A 1,680x1,050-pixel display option is now available,Sony VGP-BPL8A which costs an extra $100 (or $150 for a version that also includes an antiglare coating). Still, for a $2,000 laptop, the higher-resolution screen should be included by default.

Apple embraced the simple joys of the SD card slot in last year's MacBook Pro update,Sony VGP-BPL9 but this time around there are no comparable new features (although we're excited that the DisplayPort output now supports audio as well as video).

You do, however, have several ways to push the 15-inch MacBook Pro well past its $1,799-$2,199 default configurations. Bumping the 500GB hard drive from 5,400rpm to a faster 7,200rpm model is a $50 upgrade,Sony VGP-BPS5 and SSD drives are available from 128GB ($200) to 512GB (a whopping $1,300). RAM can be doubled to 8GB for $400, but each of the three base 15-inch models is locked into particular CPU/GPU combos.

The 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros have "automatic graphics switching," an Apple-engineered variation on Nvidia's Optimus graphics-switching technology. The concept is simple: the system uses its integrated Intel graphics by default,Sony VGP-BPS5A and when an app launches that requires the discrete Nvidia GeForce 330M GPU, it seamlessly switches over to that, then turns it off when it is no longer required.

The GeForce 330M (available in 256MB and 512MB versions) is not a hard-core gaming powerhouse, but it should be capable of playing just about any current PC game--although you may have to dial down the detail levels or resolution for optimal frame rates. In the Mac version of Call of Duty 4 we got 34.5 frames per second at 1,440x900-pixel resolution, with 4XAA and other high-end graphics options turned on, and 59 frames per second at the same resolution, but medium in-game graphics settings.

The Gateway NV7915u is a budget desktop replacement that serves up an impressive mix of features for the money.Sony VGP-BPS9 When we reviewed its predecessor at the end of last year, the Gateway NV7820u, we said it was a "fine example" of the company's "best bang-for-your-buck retail laptops." With a new processor and a lower price, this updated model offers more bang for fewer bucks. At $599,Sony VGP-BPS9A/B it's one of the cheapest laptops you'll find at retail with Intel's Core i3 processor. The laptop offers clearly superior performance to similarly priced laptops that use older Intel and AMD processors, particularly when multitasking. Plus, its large 17.3-inch display works well for juggling multiple windows or sitting back and watching a movie. Only minor nits like poor battery life (most desktop replacements are anchored near an outlet anyway) and an awkward mouse-button bar temper our enthusiasm for the otherwise stellar Gateway NV7915u.

 

The black-and-silver Gateway N7915u is set apart from similarly hued laptops by a subtle honeycomb pattern on the glossy lid.Sony VGP-BPS9/B Inside, the keyboard deck is matte black, with a glossy black strip running across the top of the keyboard. Two round hinges hold the display in place, and we'll save you some hunting by telling you that the power button resides on the side of the right hinge.Sony VGP-BPS9/S The laptop weighs 6.9 pounds and measures 1.4 inches thick, which makes it one of the lighter and thinner desktop replacements.

The keyboard has a unique look and feel with its wide, flat keys.inspiron 6400 battery We found typing to be comfortable; the keys are quiet with perfect travel. A dedicated number pad is integrated seamlessly to the right of the keyboard. Above the keyboard is a row of touch-sensitive keys. Play, pause, rewind, and fast-forward are mapped to the Function keys.

The touch pad is recessed slightly and offers a pleasing matte finish.inspiron 1525 battery It also offers multitouch support, so you can, for example, swipe two fingers to scroll down Web pages, swipe two fingers sideways to jump forward and back in your browser, and zoom in and out by pulling apart or pushing together two fingers. We also don't like the mouse buttons--or button, as it were. Instead of two separate mouse buttons, the Gateway VN7915u features a single bar below the touch pad. The 17.3-inch display features LED backlighting, a 16:9 aspect ratio, and a 1,600x900-pixel native resolution.dell d620 battery The screen is big and bright, bringing movies to life. The integrated speakers offer surprisingly big sound.Sony VGP-BPS8 We found ourselves listening to movie dialog and effects at lower than max volume--a rarity in budget laptop testing. We even found ourselves enjoying music on the integrated speakers,Toshiba PA3399U-1BAS another exercise we rarely undertake on a laptop.

The Gateway NV7915u offers a useful collection of ports,Sony VGP-BPS10 including four USB 2.0 ports split among the right and left side of the laptop. In addition to a VGA port, there's an HDMI port, which we don't see on many low-end laptops.Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Absent are an eSATA port and an ExpressCard slot. Networking options include Gigabit Ethernet and Wireless N Wi-Fi.

The laptop features a spacious 500GB hard drive; currently 320GB drives are the norm on budget laptops.apple a1060 battery And Gateway doesn't clutter the drive with bloatware;apple a1045 battery the only trials you'll find might be of interest to you: 60 days of Norton Internet Security and Microsoft Office 2007.

While other budget laptops try to make ends meet with a previous-generation processor, Fujitsu lifebook s6510 batterythe Gateway NV7915u features Intel's new Core i3 processor, one of the successors to the chipmaker's hugely popular Core 2 Duo chip. The Core i3 M330 processor is a dual-core CPU clocked at 2.13GHz. It features Intel's Hyper-Threading technology, which turns its two cores into four virtual cores, greatly aiding multitasking performance as well as the speed with any threaded application. On CNET Labs' multitasking benchmark, the Gateway NV7915u was 30 to 32 percent faster than other current budget laptops that feature Intel's Pentium T4400 chip and a comparable AMD Turion II chip. It was 35 percent faster than last year's Core 2 Duo T6600-based Gateway NV7802u laptop on the same test. The numbers decrease when looking at performance on a single application. For instance, the Gateway NV7915u was 9 to 14 percent faster than the budget laptops from Asus, Dell, HP, and Toshiba on our Photoshop benchmark.

In anecdotal testing, we experienced smooth,Lenovo/IBM ThinkPad X60 responsive performance under heavy multitasking scenarios. It played HD video seamlessly, and it loaded the files much faster than the other budget laptops tested in our spring roundup of retail systems. The Core i3 offers tangible performance increases over other budget laptops that use previous-generation parts. Aiding the Gateway NV7915u's performance is 4GB of fast 1,066MHz DDR3 memory.

Unlike higher-end desktop replacements that feature dedicated graphics,Acer Aspire 4710 the Gateway NV7915u shows its budget roots by using integrated Intel GMA HD graphics. They're capable of smooth playback of HD video, but they don't make the laptop a 3D gaming machine.

Asus continues to define the netbook standard with the new Eee PC 1000HE.Sony VGP-BPS9 Although the difference compared to previous 10-inch models is quite miniscule it continues in the Eee PC tradition of providing good value for your money. Sony VGP-BPS9A/B

 

One of the improvements in the 1000HE is a slightly faster Atom N280 CPU at 1.66GHz (compared to the N270 at 1.6GHz) with a higher FSB speed – 667MHz instead of 533MHz).Sony VGP-BPS9/B The difference here is noticeable but just barely. Sony VGP-BPS9/S

Design

Asus insists on using glossy surfaces on most of the Eee series netbooks,inspiron 6400 battery which looks nice but also attracts a lot of fingerprints. Features and Performance

In-depth performance comparisons and benchmarking don’t make as much sense with netbooks as with full-size laptops,HP Pavilion DV9000 since most of them use almost identical components.Sony VGP-BPS8A Naturally a 0.06GHz increase in CPU speed does not make for a big performance difference, but it provides a small boost thanks to the increased front side bus speed.Sony VGP-BPS8 On average its performance is slightly above par in the netbook segment.

Connectivity

Conclusion

The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE is a bit bulky compared to some “premium” and more expensive netbooks,Lenovo/IBM ThinkPad X60 but all in all you get a lot more for your money with the Eee compared to other brands. Its keyboard and trackpad are very comfortable to use, and the system is very well built. The best part, however, is the 7+ hours of battery life you can squeeze out of it,Acer Aspire 4710 which is way better than average.

Tagged for mixing their legendary performance with impressive mobility, it is a 15.4 gaming laptop that when configured properly can knock close to $5,000. Design

 

Silver and only silver, thats the fist thing youll notice with the m15x.inspiron 6400 battery The case wasn't something that impressed us much and given Alienware's reputation for edgy design (almost Giger-esque), we found the silver lid with obligatory blue-eyed alien head to be, well...boring. The 86-key keyboard has a pleasant blue LED area of light that surrounds each key and features excellent feel while keeping perfect key travel and ample space for large hands. However,Sony VGP-BPS8A flex was an issue (although isolated). We noticed a fair amount of keyboard flex,Sony VGP-BPS8 but only to the dead center of the keyboard, which only significantly affected half-dozen keys or so. Sony VGP-BPS9

The display was astounding with a native resolution at 1920x1200,Sony VGP-BPS8B and being a 15.4" WUXGA display was plenty enough pixels per inch. Although we did notice the monitor seemed to produce a softer image than most displays at this resolution. So you do have a few options - our unit came maxed out with 4 GB of DDR2 RAM running at 667 MHz,Lenovo/IBM ThinkPad T60 and that's the most you can get out of both Dual-Channel slots.
